ICSE and ISC Specimen Question Papers: What They Are and How to Use Them
Specimen question papers are the official sample papers released by CISCE each year to show students exactly how the board examination will be structured. They follow the current syllabus, reflect the question types and marks distribution, and — for select subjects — include answer keys and marking schemes.
For the 2026 exam cycle, specimen papers were released in August 2025. Approximately 40% of questions in the 2026 papers were competency-based, in line with NEP 2020 alignment. CISCE does not maintain a public year-wise previous-paper archive; specimen papers are the primary official preparation resource.
How to make the most of specimen papers
- Download the current-cycle specimen papers from cisce.org — Access them through the Examinations section on cisce.org. For the 2027 exam, the specimen papers will typically be released in August 2026.
- Study the answer key alongside each question — For subjects with official answer keys, understand not just the right answer but the level of detail and the format the examiner expects.
- Note the marks distribution by section — Understand which sections carry the most marks and which question types repeat, then organise your preparation around those priorities.
- Practice under timed conditions — Recreate exam conditions as closely as possible. ICSE and ISC papers have specific time allocations per section.
- Read the Analysis of Pupil Performance reports — CISCE publishes annual examiner reports (Analysis of Pupil Performance) on cisce.org for 16 ICSE and 21 ISC subjects, covering common errors and what examiners look for. These are free and underused.
